I've been thinking about Rick Santorum's attacks on people he calls radical environmentalists. He claims that radical environmentalists have a "world view that elevates the earth above man."
The environmentalists I know are working to elevate the rights of everyone alive today, our children, our grandchildren, and all future generations to breath clean air, drink clean water and live in a climate suitable for life. And yes, we elevate those rights above the rights of those who would sacrifice our health to maximize their short term profits.
Whether we read the Hebrew scriptures or the New Testament we have a very clear calling.
Love your neighbor as yourself. (Lev. 19:18 & Matthew 22:39)
The question we all have to ask ourselves is "Who is our neighbor?"
If we believe our children are our neighbors and our grandchildren are our neighbors - it is not much of a leap to conclude that all future generations are our neighbors.
When we truly love all future generations as ourselves, we will work to leave them with a beautiful and healthy planet capable of sustainably supporting all life - human, plant and animal.
